Ubonratana Dam

Ubonratana Dam is located at Khuen Ubonratana Sub-district, Ubonratana District, Khon Kaen Province. It is the earth core rockfill dam and is the second multi-purpose dam, followed Bhimibol Dam, and the first dam in the northeast region that generates the hydroelectric power. It impounds the Phong River at the area called “Phong Neeb” at Khok Sung Sub-district, Nam Phong District (presently Ubobratana District), Khon Kaen Province. It is 50 kilometers far from the city. The construction started in 1964 and finished in 1966. King Rama IX, Queen Sirikit, and Princess Ubolratana went to open the dam on 14 March 1966 and gave the name “Ubonratana Dam”. The beautiful dam and massive lake surrounding with the mountain attract Thai and foreign tourists to visit.

Ubonratana Dam is also called “Phong Neeb Dam” because it was constructed opposite to the Phong River and impounds the river at the valley connecting Phu Kao mountain range and Phu Phan Kham.
